When it comes to designing enclosures for electronics, do you hardly ever see one standard solution for all kinds of electronics and electronics. That's because, case designers and engineers often choose custom parts based on the device + required specifications and specific features. Electronic enclosure materials are no exception. It is very necessary to understand the properties, advantages and disadvantages of each material for the design and customization of the housing. In this regard, YONGUCASE brings you the "thermal knowledge" of electronic housing materials.

Considerations

As mentioned above, the selection of components should follow the specific function of the equipment. So here are some factors you need to consider before starting the enclosure design work:

Does your equipment need to be resistant to chemical or salt water corrosion? What weather conditions (snow, rain or sleet) will your equipment encounter? Does your equipment need to be equipped with EMI/RF shielding? Does your electronic  equipment require machining and cutting ?

What level of ingress protection (e.g. IP rating or NEMA rating) is required for your equipment?

. . . . . .

After considering these issues, the next step is to consider and decide on substantive issues. Yongucase lists typical enclosure materials below to give you a simple idea of what electronic or electrical enclosures are designed for.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel is a type of steel combined with metal alloys such as manganese and chromium. This alloying improves its durability. Due to the properties of stainless steel, it is highly resistant to scratches, pitting, staining and corrosion.

In addition, there are different grades of stainless steel to choose from, and each grade of stainless steel has its own advantages. 304 stainless steel is the most commonly used material. Stainless steel housings are ideal for manufacturing electronic devices that require high durability.

At the same time, stainless steel has become an ideal material for outdoor windproof enclosures due to its excellent corrosion resistance and weather resistance.

Aluminum

Aluminum is extracted from bauxite and is hard, shiny and lightweight. Aluminum is a highly recommended enclosure material due to its natural weather resistance, corrosion resistance, and high aesthetic appearance.

Aluminum is lighter and easier to cut with machining tools than stainless steel. In addition, the aluminum box has the following other advantages: corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, not easy to deform, green and environmentally friendly, and high strength.

ABS

Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) is a hard plastic that strikes a great balance between durability and cost-effectiveness. In addition, it is also flame retardant.

Typically used in plastic box for common electronic equipment. You can find it in everyday life, especially in the field of electronic products.

The ABS enclosure can provide good protection for indoor electronic equipment. Due to its low price, it is an ideal material for mass production equipment.
